Rehoboth Beach Increases Parking Rates

| |

Rehoboth Beach has joined a growing list of Delaware resort towns to increase parking rates for the upcoming summer.

Rates on 275 meters throughout the city will increase by a quarter an hour this summer, changing from $1 to $1.25, city manager Gregory Ferrese said. The move is expected to bring in more than $20,000 in additional revenue, according to budget documents. The meters are generally coin-operated and located on sidestreets.

The city increased rates for meters on Rehobooth Avenue last summer, however those will remain unchanged at $1.50 per hour this year, Ferrese said.

"We're always concerned about raising prices but we thought this would be commensurate with what other towns are doing," Commissioner Stan Mills said.

Also increasing, 27 parking fines ranging from permit violations to illegal parking. Fines for expired meters are increasing $5, a move expected to bring in more than $71,000. The city will also add a $20 processing fee onto all building permit applications and increase wastewater rates by 10 percent. The revenue from the wastewater increase will be set aside for the city's upcoming wastewater project, Mayor Samuel Cooper said.

City commissioners unanimously approved the increases as part of the upcoming $14 million budget.

Earlier this year, Dewey Beach and Bethany Beach both approved increases in parking rates as part of their budgets.
